Alternative Facts and Fake News are this season’s buzzwords. What happens to objectivity, reliability, and notions of the truth when readers gather information from social media and news feeds tailored to their political views? How can we counteract or complicate news bubbles? What is the news media’s role and how is it changing? What can history teach us? What do we teach our children?
Join local community arts group Slow Theatre as we host the first installment of a new public discussion series, Chico Speaks. This event will build on the tremendous success of our February event, The People’s State of the Union, which drew 200+ audience members.
Free & open to the public. Donations to the nonprofit organizations Slow Theatre & 1078 Gallery accepted with gratitude.

Dinner à la Art
A Fundraiser for 1078 Gallery
Saturday, April 8
Host sign-up form | Guest sign-up form
Would you like to host a dinner or go to a dinner for 1078 Gallery?
On Saturday, April 8, at 6pm, we are holding a fundraiser that consists of individual dinners hosted by artists, friends and members of the gallery. Hosts will invite their friends to their home at 6pm, asking for confirmations and contributions before the dinner. At 8:30 pm, everyone will head for the gallery for dessert and music.
Hosts can determine their menu and how they want to ask for donations: we are suggesting a starting point of $25 per person, acknowledging that some groups might pay less, some more. It all depends on what people can give. (At least two hosts are asking $50).
The intention is to raise money for 1078 Gallery, increase membership, and introduce new people to the gallery in a pleasant and entertaining way.
We hope you'll participate! If you have questions please email [email protected].

Search Party: C-tours
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition My Witness Is the Empty Sky.
Sign up HERE. Tour spots are limited.
All tours start at 1078 Gallery, 820 Broadway Street, Chico.
Search Party C-tours will offer locals a chance to explore the everyday through a new lens, engage with the familiar in an unfamiliar way, and discover the miracles of the mundane.
The Search Party C-tours have been designed by students in CSU C's ARTS 371 Mixed Media Intermediate Sculpture course, taught by Professor Sheri Simons. Students in the class are investigating forms of mapping and wayfinding as they overlap with studio art practices. In particular, they are investigating the Situationist Internationale's introduction of the "derivé" into the art milieu of Paris in the mid-20th century. The Dérive (literally: “drifting”) is a way of heightening one's awareness of the everyday by taking playful journeys or strolls that unlock the psychogeographical* effects of the city. Using the example of B-tours, a Berlin-based platform for artistic urban tours (b-tour.org), the class has been researching contemporary visual artists who practice mapping and investigation of the city as subject. In an effort to examine what lies under the blanket of our city, the students are offering C-tours (C for Chico) as a method to examine the city as a place of action, authentic experience, feedback and change.
Search Party: C-tours is one of two days the sculpture students are leading tours. Additional tours will be offered at University Art Gallery at CSU, Chico in conjunction with Performance Space/ Play Space on Tuesday, March 22nd, 12:30-1:30. Strangers, a very unwelcoming term for someone who has yet to have an effect on our lives. What takes a stranger from someone we will never remember to someone we will never forget? We may not realize the role we play with just our words, doesn’t even have to be encouraging but they can be valuable. On this tour we are giving people a chance to share, to be heard, and possibly remembered. We will be seekers and finders of wisdom, extracting knowledge from whomever we may ask.
Must bring: Outdoor weather clothes, writing utensil, and a sense of awe.
Appropriate for ages 18+
#2: Time Capsule
Tour Guide: Marlena Weiss
We can look at a painting and attribute it to being the byproduct of the work of human hands… something with intention and purpose that calls for a second glance. But what about the things we leave behind? Or what of the places and objects that were forgotten or forlorn, lost in the memories of the people who were there before us? Archaeological survey searches for and calls attention to the remnants of past lives, giving these otherwise ignored artifacts meaning and importance. Most of archaeology works on a time scale of hundreds to thousands of years, but this survey will take you through the (sub)urban environment of the city of Chico, calling attention to the remnants and discards of recent memory.
We will travel on bike to three locations in Chico pulsing with stories waiting to be discovered and shared. At each location we will record our experiences and travel to a fourth location where we will leave behind our own memoir of Chico, for someone else to find. Tour ends at Humboldt Park at 1:00pm.
Must bring: Bicycle, backpack/sack, $5-10, writing utensil, paper/pad for sketching.
Appropriate for ages 18+ that can ride a bike
#3: Please Touch the Art: A Tactile Tour
Tour Guide: Alyssa VanZandt
To better understand our surroundings, we will immerse ourselves in the textures of the city. In this tactile tour, you will be blindfolded in order to help compose a mental map of the city with only the assistance of verbal descriptions and your sense of touch. We will visit a variety of different public art pieces that many may have seen but most likely overlooked. You will instinctively interact with your environment feel texture in order to help complete a mental image of the artwork. Come with closed eyes and open minds!
Length of Tour: 0.75 miles
Must bring: Belt, comfortable walking shoes, and outdoor wear.
Appropriate for all ages (children must be accompanied)
#4: The Change of Heart Tour
Tour Guide: Holly Ray Wright
There are real assholes out there, assholes who'll take your time, money, and love. But they are not the whole world. They're just a few. Don't walk out on the world.
—Iain S. Thomas, How to be Happy
Come traverse through some highlights of downtown Chico while interacting with your fellow humanity! The Change of Heart Tour will explore how simple acts of kindness can spread an addictively euphoric change in people's days and attitudes. By breaking our often selfish routines, we will endeavor to become more aware of our surroundings and the people around us. The route we take will directly correlate with the random acts of kindness which we will be performing, creating a route or map of kindness. This is your chance to have some fun and discover new parts of downtown Chico. Have a change of heart that will help Chico survive through kindness. Tour ends at downtown Chico park.
Must bring: $7.00 to donate towards some kindness acts, good walking shoes, a digital camera or camera phone.
Appropriate for ages 18+
#5: You will soon be guided by a power deep within yourself — a power that is transformative and sublime.
Tour Guide: Rhys
There is magic all around us and it’s just for us. This walking tour is an interface between humans and the city of Chico. It is a catalyst for reestablishing a connection with our body to find confidence. This tour is for the gentle, those who are trying to survive and are searching for their inner light.
Findings show that creative abilities are believed to transfer through touch via intermediary objects and impacts actual performance within the paradigm of magical thinking. It wasn’t the magic rock, the magic was in you all along, but you infused the rock with your magic.
We will explore the importance of breathing and mini celebrations; an opportunity to clear our energies. Learn to evaluate yourself independently. Avoid the constant sense of chaos that comes from relying too much on the opinions of others. The future will culminate in an unfolding of energy and synchronicities.
Must dress as comfortably and as beautifully as you feel. Be prepared to forfeit non-medical electronics.
Appropriate for ages 18+
#6: Chico’s Colorful Underbelly Hidden in Plain View
Tour Guide: Zephyr Ian Farris
This bike tour will honor graffiti locales on the backsides of, or under areas trafficked heavily, where graffiti accumulates. These areas are industrial, commercial, and next to watersheds. Illuminated is the juxtaposition of vivid, conceptual, and highly technical artworks on vapid, mundane, drab surfaces.
The experience will be a contemporary graffiti history lesson; an avant-garde response to socioeconomic strife, industrialism, and the bourgeoisie. We will investigate the Situationists movement and psychogeography: the impact people and place have on each other.
Participants will engage in print making, map making, and be given votives. It’s an urban safari; we will experience real life, wild life. Exhibition to follow at 1078 Gallery.
Must bring: bicycle, camera (Polaroid or digital), and wear outfits: debonair, docent, safari, B-boy, etc. Participants are expected to take photos, color in handouts, make prints, and then email photos to archive.
Appropriate for ages 18+

*Psychogeography as defined in Wikipedia: Defined in 1955 by Guy Debord as "the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behavior of individuals."
Make Seed Balls with the
Chico Seed Lending Library
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition My Witness Is the Empty Sky
Seed balls are an ancient method of no-till agriculture and currently are used by guerrilla gardeners for urban beautification and wildland restoration. You can plant a rocky hillside or drop on vacant lots during the rainy season for endless beauty (as well as providing a habitat for pollinators).
Bring small native flower seeds or just your hands and join in the fun! We’ll start the process at 6pm and wrap up by 8pm.
The Chico Seed Lending Library (CSLL) team is comprised of Sherri Scott, Jane Hirtel, Joan Bosque, Stephanie Ladwig-Cooper, and Sarah Vantrease. CSLL is a collaboration between Earthshed Solutions, GRUB Education Program, and Butte County Library. For more information, visit chicoseedlendinglibrary.org

Slow Theatre Reads Orange Flower Water
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition My Witness Is the Empty Sky
Slow Theatre reads an excerpt from Craig Wright's play Orange Flower Water, “a brutally honest drama about marriage and infidelity—one that chronicles the inevitable big damage and ugly fallout engendered by a ceaseless pursuit of selfishness and an unrestrained search for personal happiness.” (The Chicago Sun-Times)
"Slow Theatre" requires a deliberate approach to artistic production involving outreach to find stories within our community, research to bring contextual understanding to our artists and audiences, multiple readings of the script within ever widening circles to prompt critical dialogue, and work-shopping the text before it reaches full rehearsal. Members of Slow Theatre come from all walks of life and share an interest in storytelling which engages the emotional and political truths of our region. For more information, visit slowtheatre.com.

Jan. 2007 – “Conditions” with Matthew Hopson-Walker, Linda Frost, Leighton McWilliams. Linda Frost’s digital collages depict the barbaric world of vivisection and the ethical conflicts that arise as once-wild species die for dubious human causes. Matthew Hopson-Walker’s large drawings satirize personal experience, and are metaphors “for the trials of a normal life peppered with mediocrity, hardship, failure, and success.” Leighton McWilliams’ small scale, diaristic photo constructions draw from the works of Joseph Cornell, forensic imaging, and the history of photography. Feb. 2007 – “Looped Life” Leticia Bajuyo, Nancy Hathaway, John O’Donnell.
