Since receiving his BFA from University of Wisconsin-Stout, Menomonie, WI, in 2004, Joshua Bindewald has been living and working in and around Minneapolis. Trained as a printmaker, Josh works primarily with etching and monoprinting. He also paints profusely by employing less traditional techniques, tools and materials. Whatever the medium, he has a passion for experimentation. He was a founding member of the now defunct artist collective “Level” whose studio was located in the Northrup King Building in Northeast Minneapolis. He has also been a productive artist in the basement of rental properties in Robbinsdale and South Minneapolis. To be a professional artist and educator is his ultimate career goal. He will earn his MFA from Bradley University in Peoria, IL, in spring 2011.
In addition to being chosen for the MFA juried show Wanted: Wall Work at the 1078 Gallery in spring 2010, Bindewald has exhibited at Greener Grass Cross Country Exhibition of Mid-Western Art (U.S. Locations); National Small Prints Exhibition Washington Printmakers Gallery (Washington, D.C.); in Peoria: Inland Visual Studies Center Exhibition Prairie Center of the Arts, 31st Annual Fine Arts Exhibition FUMC, Sun Foundation Winter Warming Children’s Program Benefit Contemporary Art Center; in Minneapolis: Independent Art Space, Juried Spiritual Art Show, Level Group Exhibition Gallery 13, Art Attack Northrup King Building, Art A Whirl Northrup King Building, Level Studios, Dean Gallery; and in Menomonie: Student Show Furlong Gallery and Who Arted? UW-Stout. He has various awards, publications, employment, artist collaborations, volunteer placements, memberships in organizations, and attendance at conferences and workshops under his belt.
He writes: “Blending technical exploration, alchemy, and chance with texture and line work evocative of handwriting, I create detailed, layered compositions that address the tense relationship between chaos and order.”
