A Culminating B.F.A. Exhibition from California State University, Chico
November 25 - December 3, 2011
Reception: Thursday, December 1, 5 - 7pm (talk at 6)
Ellen Akimoto was born in Westlake Village, California, in 1988 and has been living in Chico since 2000. She began her undergraduate study at California State University, Chico, in 2006, and spent the 2010/11 school year studying in Germany at the Kunsthochschule Mainz.
Her works focus on humans as social beings who readily assign and create meaning. Oil painted figures are cut out and reconfigured on the wall, forming new narratives with each successive installation. These figures are stuck in odd postures or partake in strange activities, enmeshed in a system of rules, a social order, which comes off as absurd or incomprehensible, yet affects its subjects on a deep level.
Ellen Akimoto will complete her BFA in studio art from CSU Chico in December 2011.
