Koch currently lives in Portland, OR. He writes: “We live in a world full of symbols. I am interested in the development of the symbol as iconic shorthand for myth, ideal, or transformative process. The human ability to create or 'discover' meaning is something that has fascinated me since childhood. From the fairy tales of my youth to the myths and symbols of my adult pursuits, I have studied and observed the path of symbols in the world. As an artist, I seek to discover how an idea evolves into a symbolic object and how that object may come to be perceived by the believer or the non-believer as either transformative symbol or as cynical prop. This transitional space informs my work as I create objects that acknowledge the opposing viewpoints of belief and doubt, of symbol and artifice.”
