Statement from 1078 Gallery Regarding Emergencies Exhibition
1078 Gallery community joins Chico in grieving the violence that occurred at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library on June 22, 2026. We extend our deepest sympathy to those directly affected and to all who are carrying shock, fear, and grief. Prior to this event, 1078 Gallery had installed Emergencies, an exhibition of large-scale Jacquard tapestries by Boston-based artist Gary Duehr. Drawing from media images, Duehr’s work explores moments of public crisis and human vulnerability, depicting scenes of protest, conflict, and connection. We believe art plays an important role in engaging with complex human experiences. It can bear witness, ask difficult questions, and create space for reflection and dialogue. At the same time, art does not exist in a vacuum. The tragic shooting has profoundly changed the context in which this exhibition would be experienced. While Emergencies was not created in response to this event, we recognize that many in our community are navigating fresh trauma, and these images may now feel overwhelming. After careful consideration, we have decided to remove the exhibition from public view. This decision reflects our commitment to balancing artistic expression with care for our community. In this moment, we believe responding to community needs must come first. We remain grateful to Gary Duehr and to the opportunity to present work that thoughtfully examines collective experience. We will continue to support artists engaging with complex subjects while remaining attentive to the communities we serve. As our community heals, we remain committed to fostering connection, dialogue, creativity, and care. Gary Duehr has been chosen as a Best Emerging Artist in New England by the International Association of Art Critics, and he has received an Artist Grant in photography from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. His work has been featured in museums and galleries including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; MOMA PS 1, New York, NY; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba, as well as exhibitions in Tokyo, Venice, Stockholm, London and Barcelona. Past awards include grants from the LEF Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. His public artworks include a video artwork for the Canadian subway system; a photo installation funded by the Visible Republic program of New England Foundation for the Arts, and a commission from the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority) for a permanent photo installation at North Station. Duehr has written about the arts for journals including ArtScope, Art New England, Art on Paper, Communication Arts, Frieze, and Public Culture.
