Alan Botsford is the co-editor of Poetry Kanto, Japan's leading bilingual poetry journal. He is an associate professor of American literature at Kanto Gakuin Univeristy in Yokohama, Japan, where he lives with his wife, illustrator Minako Saitoh, and his son Sage. His books include Walt Whitman of Cosmic Folklore (Sage Hill Press, 2010), A Book of Shadows (Saru, 2005), and mamaist: learning a new language (Minato No Hito, 2002). His work has appeared in American Writing, Barbaric Yawp, Confrontation, Edge, Home Planet News, Mickle Street Review, Muse Apprentice Guild, Pearl Magazine, Poetry Kanto, River Styx, Small Pond Magazine, and Yemassee.
Botsford writes about his newest book:
“The book I've written consists of dialogues and poems
(and essays) which lend themselves to performance, in that they engage in dialogue
with Whitman as bard in various ways, so the audience participates--either by having
an audience member or two read a dialogue with me, or by 'overhearing' a poet's
dialogue with another poet, that is, opening up the ongoing creative process between the
past & present, the living & the dead which poetry-writing is. (Previous books of poems published are also performance-oriented, so-called 'mamaist' poems.)”

Literary Events at 1078
The literary committee works to bring writing talent to the microphone at 1078 Gallery, from outside of Chico and within Chico. Quality is our overriding value, and with that as our first priority, we then emphasize play and experiment, including mixing genres. We’ve had literature and music together, fiction and poetry, creative non-fiction and presentation of poetry and process. If you have ideas for literary performances, call the gallery and leave contact information or email the gallery at info@1078gallery.org (Please put "Literary" in the subject), and one of the members of the committee will get back to you.
